Norway 2004 - Part I

During my 3-weeks backpacking trip in Scandinavian countries, i was
most impressed with the nature landscape in Norway. The following is
a collection of images that will give you a glimpse of some extraordinary
landscapes i experienced.

myrdal

Myrdal is the starting point of the famous Flamsbana railway journey,
which considers to be one of the high points of Norway in a Nutshell tour.
Travellers also have the option of hiking or mountain biking along this
scenic gravel path down to the village of Flam.

To the right of the first image lies the reality of the place. A moment of
peacefulness was interrupted at every hour by flocks of tourists coming
from Oslo or Bergen, waiting to get on the next Flamsbana, a 55 minutes
train journey between myrdal and Flam.

This is the only train stop between myrdal and Flam.
Passengers rushed to the viewing platform to
capture this spectacular view of the fall.

While tourists were busy photographing, in the far
end by the waterfall a woman dressed in red emerged
behind the rock, dancing along what sounded like
traditional norwegian music in the background.

Nearly the end of 55 min. Flambana train ride,
tourists were welcomed with this beautiful scenery.

Otternes

Biked from Flam for half hour, climbed up the steep hill on gravel road
for another 15 minutes, i unexpectedly visited Otternes, a remote village
consist of 27 houses dated back to 16th century. Here, one enjoys the
spectacular view of the Sognefjord and a moment of tranquility.

Bryggen, the waterfront

Bergen. Norway. July 2004. Photo: v.c.

In the late Middle ages the Hanseatic League established the German Kontor in
Bryggen (meaning “the waterfront” or wharf), which became a thriving center of
international trade. The characteristic parallel rows of buildings, with their
seaward-facing gables represent a building tradition dating back almost 900
years. The old wooden buildings along the harbor front in Bergen were placed
on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.

Norwegian troll

Bergen. Norway. July 2004. Photo: v.c.

The legend of trolls was born in Norway's dark forests
and mountainsides. The creatures are said to emerge
from their hiding places only after sunset, have the
ability to transform themselves at will and, when
provoked, are notoriously quick to anger.
